Toms River Man Charged With Attempted Murder After Gunshot Victim Showed Up at Local Hospital

A Toms River man is facing multiple weapons charges on top of attempted murder, following an investigation that began after a gunshot victim showed up at the emergency department of Ocean Medical Center in Brick Township, prosecutors announced Friday.

The first sign of a serious incident occurring came at about 10 p.m. the night of Jan. 7, when the Lakewood Township Police Department received a 911 call reporting gunshots in the area of the West Gate Shopping Complex.  A short time later, a 27 year-old male victim arrived at Ocean Medical Center with gunshot wounds to both of his arms.  The victim was treated for his injuries and released. His name was not publicly divulged.

Million Brown-Bey, 47, of Toms River, was charged with attempted murder, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, unlawful possession of a weapon, being a certain person not to possess a weapon, and refusal to allow a biological sample to be collected.

A subsequent investigation by the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office and Lakewood police found that the victim arrived at a residence on Hillside Avenue in Lakewood, at which time an individual approached his vehicle and fired at least one round – striking the victim in both arms.  The victim was able to leave the area and drive himself to the hospital. Through further investigation, law enforcement was able to identify Brown-Bey as the individual responsible for the victim’s shooting.

On Thursday, Brown-Bey was taken into custody by detectives from the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crime Unit and Lakewood Township Police Department. He refused to provide a DNA sample as required by law, the statement said. Brown-Bey was transported to the Ocean County Jail, where he was lodged pending a detention hearing.

A search of Ocean County jail records Friday showed Brown-Bey was no longer listed as an inmate.
