Toms River police said they rendered aid to a man found shot in the parking lot of police headquarters Friday, but he ultimately succumbed to his wounds.
In a short statement, the department said officers discovered a male with a self-inflicted gunshot wound in the parking lot of police headquarters on Oak Avenue. The discovery was made at about 3 p.m.
“Officers immediately rendered aid, and he was transported to Community Medical Center by Silverton First Aid where he was pronounced,” police spokeswoman Jillian Messina said. “The investigation is on-going at this time.”
Police rarely comment publicly on incidents in which people take their own lives, however such short explanations are provided when an incident occurs in a public place, drawing attention, in order to prevent rumors or misinformation from spreading.
