A Mexican eatery that has proven popular on the Seaside Heights boardwalk is planning to open a new location on the mainland, due to be open year-round.

Beach Tacos, known for both its popular food truck and location on southern end of the Seaside Heights boardwalk in what has become known as the “food court” area, is due to appear before the Toms River Township planning board Wednesday night to present its plan for a location off Fischer Boulevard. The restaurant’s boardwalk location is currently closed for the season and will not reopen until spring.

Beach Tacos is proposing its mainland location at 1165 Fischer Boulevard, which was once home to the Memory Lane Diner and another non-restaurant business. It is current unoccupied. Plans call for the restaurant to construct an exterior deck and other improvements to the building as part of a renovation. The planning board will be required to issue variances before the restaurant can begin working on its improvements, most of which consist of existing setback and boundary lines due to the location of the lot. The restaurant will also propose 33 parking spaces where 69 would usually be required under the township’s zoning ordinance.

The restaurant first gained a following with its signature food truck before its first free-standing restaurant opened on the boardwalk several seasons ago. Many boardwalk strollers know the restaurant by the smiling sculpture of a snoozing man wearing a sombrero “supervising” the boards from the front door.

The boardwalk location is brightly decorated with modern flare and offers a second-floor indoor-outdoor area with a deck overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. Its menu features Mexican cuisine staples such as tacos, burritos, quesadillas, nachos, empanadas and tostadas.

The restaurant is also planning a North Jersey location in Springfield, the company said.

The Toms River planning board is scheduled to hear the application at its meeting Wednesday night at 6 p.m. at the township municipal complex on Washington Street.
