Mail Carrier Beaten, Robbed On His Route in Toms River; Police Looking for Suspects

A U.S. Postal Service mail carrier was brutally beaten and robbed while making deliveries on his route shortly after 4 p.m. Wednesday, a police spokeswoman said. A photograph of the suspect’s vehicle was released as police are beginning their investigation into the incident.

According to police spokeswoman Jillian Messina, officers were dispatched to the corner of Madison and Lexington avenues for a reported burglary in progress.

“Officers were met by a mailman who stated that he noticed two males in hoodies walking down the street as he was delivering mail in the area,” said Messina. “As he returned to his mail truck, the males hit him in the head, knocking him to the ground, and then kicked his head. They took his belongings and fled the area down Madison Avenue, toward Hooper Avenue.”

A physical description of the suspects beyond their gender and clothing was not included in the police statement.

A photo of the suspect vehicle is embedded above this story. Police say it is believed there were three males involved, two who assaulted the driver, and one who remained in the vehicle.

“Similar incidents have been reported throughout the state,” Messina said.
