New Jersey Department of Transportation officials on Friday announced lane closures for the next few weeks on the Route 37 J. Stanley Tunney Bridge, which carries westbound traffic from the barrier island to the mainland, for deck repairs in Toms River, Ocean County.
Beginning at 7 a.m. Monday, Oct. 3 until 4 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 6, and continuing each week, Monday through Thursday for “a few weeks,” NJDOT’s contractor, PKF Mark III, Inc., is scheduled to close one lane on the Route 37 westbound Tunney Bridge for bridge deck repairs. In addition to that lane, from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. each day Monday through Thursday, a second lane will be closed.
At least one lane will be maintained at all times, the DOT said. Route 37 eastbound traffic on the Thomas A. Mathis Bridge will not be affected. The work is expected to be completed by the end of October.
This work is part of a $9.6 million statewide bridge maintenance contract. Variable messaging signs are being utilized to provide advance notification to the motoring public of all traffic pattern changes associated with the work, the DOT said in its statement.
The precise timing of the work is subject to change due to weather or other factors. Motorists are encouraged to check NJDOT’s traffic information website www.511nj.org for construction updates.
