The Toms River Police Department’s Special Enforcement Team concluded a month long investigation into the distribution of heroin in town last week with the arrest of a man who had 27 bricks of heroin in his motel room.
The 27 bricks add up to 1,350 doses of heroin, police said in a statement. Dowann J. Smith, 27 of Ocean Township, is now facing numerous drug and weapons charges after police raided his room at the Rest Inn Motel, 2015 Route 37 East, as well as an apartment located along the highway. Officers also conducted a traffic stop on a Ford Taurus that was connected to the case, the statement said.
Smith, police said, was found to be in possession of approximately 27 bricks (1,350 doses) of heroin, a Taurus .380 handgun, a small amount of marijuana, drug paraphernalia and $715 in cash. Authorities estimate the street value of the heroin seized at over $5,000.00.
Smith was charged with possession of heroin, possession of over one half ounce of heroin with the intent to distribute, possession of a handgun during a drug offense, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, possession of a handgun without a valid permit, possession of marijuana under 50 grams and possession of drug paraphernalia.
Smith is currently being held at the Ocean County Jail awaiting a detention hearing. His photo was not available.
