A single-vehicle crash tied up traffic along a stretch of New Hapshire Avenue in Toms River Monday night, culminating in a 17-year-old being taken to the hospital where he was issued a traffic summons.
The 6:15 p.m. crash occurred on New Hampshire Avenue, just south of North Maple Avenue, police spokeswoman Jillian Messina said, when his vehicle struck a utility pole.
The 17-year-old male from Forked River, who was not identified because of his age, suffered several non-life threatening in injuries in the collision and was taken to Community Medical Center by Lakewood Police EMS, Messina said. Verizon utility crews were on scene replacing the pole, causing New Hampshire Ave to be shut down for several hours, producing a traffic backup during rush hour.
Traffic Safety Officer Mark Nater is investigating the cause of the collision. The juvenile was charged with careless driving, police said.
