The Donovan Catholic Athletic Complex on Whitty Road would be festooned with two domes under a proposal that will be heard by the Toms River Township zoning board next month.
The board will hear the application to build two separate domes on top of two portions of the complex, located at 1380 Whitty Road. According to documents filed with the township, the school is seeking to place one over the existing tennis courts and the other to cover artificial turf fields. Details on the physical structures or how they will appear were not provided in a public notice, though they will be presented at the hearing.
The matter requires zoning board approval due to the necessity of two variances. The major variance required is a use variance, commonly known as a “D” variance. Donovan Catholic’s attorney, Harvey York, will present the board with special reasons as to why the domes should be allowed. The board will also consider a more minor bulk variance to allow 112-feet of lot frontage where 125-feet would normally be required.
Members of the public may speak at the hearing, which is set for Aug. 9 at 6:30 p.m. at the township municipal complex on Washington Street.
