A Toms River man quickly escaped from his vehicle after he noticed smoke coming from the engine compartment Monday morning. Soon after, the entire car was engulfed in flames, police said.

The 26-year-old driver was on his way to the township’s Loews store for work when he saw the smoke, and immediately pulled into the nearest parking lot – a PNC Bank branch at 1329 Hooper Avenue. Police and fire units arrived at 7:56 a.m. to find the 1995 Mercedes-Benz fully engulfed, according to police spokesman Ralph Stocco.

Firefighters successfully put out the fire and there were no injuries reported, Stocco said.
