Township police are continuing to investigate the circumstances of an accident Sunday that claimed the life of a Toms River woman.
The 5:49 p.m. accident at the intersection of Hooper Avenue and Terrace Avenue resulted in the death of Manuela Morales-Torres, 60, of Walnut Street, who was crossing the intersection.
Police said Rosemary Goebel, 76, of Northstream Drive in Toms River, was driving a 2016 Chevrolet Equinox east on Terrace Avenue when she made a left turn through a green light to go northbound on Hooper Avenue. She then struck a man and woman who were crossing Hooper Avenue in an easterly direction, according to police spokesman Ralph Stocco.
Morales-Torres died in the crash, while a 62-year-old male companion of hers is currently being treated at a local hospital for several injuries. It is not yet known if the two pedestrians were in a crosswalk when they were struck, Stocco said.
Toms River Traffic Safety Officers Robert Westfall and Brian Doyle are conducting the investigation along with members of the Ocean County Prosecutor’s office and Ocean County Sheriff’s Department CSI Division.
