Authorities say a man was shot and killed by police in a Toms River apartment Tuesday after a physical altercation took place when officers went to check on him.
Al Della Fave, spokesman for the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office, said at approximately 12:30 p.m., two members of the Toms River Police Department were following up on a prior report of a person believed to be in need of professional mental health intervention services at the Silver Ridge Apartments, 109 Edgewood Court.
“During the course of their investigation a physical altercation took place after making contact with the 56-year-old white male subject,” said Della Fave. “That altercation lead to the discharge of a service weapon(s).”
The name of the deceased man was not released.
An autopsy by the Ocean County Medical Examiners Office will be conducted and a full report regarding the cause and manner of death will be included in future investigative findings.
“At this time the investigation and scene processing are the priority,” said Della Fave.
“When all the facts and circumstances surrounding the event are definitively confirmed,” he said, a more complete account of what occurred will be released public.
Police and detectives from the county prosecutor’s and sheriff’s offices were on scene collecting evidence for the upcoming investigation.
