A house fire that killed a township woman on Tuesday also resulted in an injury to a firefighter, officials confirmed.
Ralph Stocco, Toms River police spokesman, said the man – believed to be a 23-year-old volunteer from the Silverton fire company – was injured trying to enter the building to make a rescue.
“He was burned on his neck and ear when he bravely entered the burning building,” said Stocco.
The fire claimed the life of a 64-year-old township woman, whose name has not yet been released by authorities.
