The Toms River Regional school district plans to use a grant to purchase environmentally friendly school buses, and expects more grant funding to come through in the near future.
Superintendent David M. Healy said the district was recently awarded a $180,000 grant from the federal Environmental Protection Agency, which will be used to purchase fuel-efficient, “environmentally friendly” buses. The buses will be purchased as part of the district’s regular bus maintenance and replacement program, he said.
A separate grant of $100,000 from the state Department of Education will be used toward starting a summer elementary program at one of the district’s Title I schools, which are schools designated to have a heightened number of students from low-income families, and thus eligible for additional funding. The TRRS district has eight Title I schools.
