Authorities said a pedestrian was struck by a vehicle and killed Monday night while crossing a busy Toms River roadway outside of a crosswalk.

Toms River police were called to the area of Whitesville Road and Jumping Brook Drive at about 8:45 p.m. Monday for a report of a pedestrian having been struck by a motor vehicle, according to a statement from the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office. An investigation conducted by township and county investigators determined that Howard Dasheff, 67, of Brooklyn, N.Y., was wearing dark clothing “while attempting to cross outside a designated crosswalk” on Whitesville Road.

He was struck by a 2021 Chevrolet Camaro being operated by Scott McIvor, Jr., 22, of Jackson Township.

Dasheff was transported to Monmouth Medical Center, Southern Campus, in Lakewood where he ultimately succumbed to his injuries. McIvor was not injured, but remained on the scene and “exhibited no outward signs of impairment,” authorities said.

The matter remains under investigation by the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office Vehicular Homicide Unit, Toms River Township Police Department, and Ocean County Sheriff’s Office Crime Scene Investigation Unit.
