A pedestrian was killed Friday night while attempting to cross Water Street in Toms River, police said.
The 6:30 p.m. accident occurred when James Icklan, 73, of Manchester, was attempting to cross Water Street in a southern direction at Robbins Parkway, in the crosswalk, and was subsequently struck by a 2003 Isuzu, according to police spokesman Ralph Stocco.
While Icklan was in a crosswalk, he was apparently crossing against traffic and the pedestrian indicator sign, police said.
The Isuzu, which was being operated by Carlos Irizarry, 51, of Toms River, was traveling East on Water Street. As Irizarry’s vehicle entered the intersection he struck Icklan. A witness at the scene provided “helpful information as to the initial causation of the incident,” Stocco said.
The investigation in ongoing and anyone with information should contact Officer Gambardella at 732-349-0150 extension 1365.
