Toms River police say they have arrested a 53-year-old township man a day after he fled from them during a traffic stop Monday.

Peter O’Neill, 53, of Toms River, is facing charges of obstruction of law, eluding police and failure to stop at a stop sign – the original reason for which he was pulled over Monday at 9:45 p.m.

Officers first tried to pull over the man after he was seen driving erratically on Route 37 near Vaughn Avenue, said police spokeswoman Jillian Messina. The stop was initiated after he allegedly failed to stop for a stop sign. O’Neill pulled over, police say, then fled the vehicle. Township police searched the area with assistance from the Ocean County Sheriff’s Department and Island Heights police to no avail, but on Tuesday, officers spotted the man at Riverwood Park and he was placed under arrest.
