Toms River police say a township man walked into a lane of traffic on Route 9 earlier this week and was hit by a car.

Samuel Mauro, 81 of Manchester Twp., was traveling north on Route 9, approximately 370 feet south of Route 70 on Tuesday at about 2:40 p.m., police spokeswoman Jillian Messina said.  Michael S Goldberg, 60, of Toms River, was walking eastbound and was attempting to cross Route 9.

Goldberg successfully crossed the southbound lane of Route 9, but when he attempted to cross the northbound lane, he stepped into the path of Mauro’s vehicle and was struck.

“Goldberg was not crossing within a crosswalk and was attempting to cross Route 9 mid-block,” a statement from police said. “He improperly crossed the roadway and additionally failed to yield the right away to Mr. Mauro, causing the collision.”

Goldberg was transported by Toms River Police EMS to Jersey Shore Medical Center and is listed in critical but stable condition.

There is no evidence of impairment and there were no other injuries, Messina said. Anyone who witnessed the accident is being asked to contact investigating Traffic Safety Officer Robert Westfall at 732-349-0150 x 1306 or by email at rwestfall@trpolice.org.

The investigation is ongoing and no charges have been filed.
